| What Document Format is Best For Electronic Filing? |
|
by Winchel 'Todd' Vincent III |
| 6/1/1998 |
One of the first questions one must ask when considering
electronic filing of court documents is "What format?"
Historically, the legal profession has used Word Perfect as
its word processing tool. Microsoft Word, however, is
becoming more popular in the legal office. Other formats
exist, such as Rich Text Format (RTF) and Adobe's PDF. Using
technology such as XML, still other "smart document" formats
could exist.
The question is what format is the best for
electronic filing, in the short-term and in the long-term. What
Document Format is Best for Electronic Court Filing is a
short, two page paper that highlights the issue.

As electronic court filing software and services become
available in the market, court clerks and administrators will
begin to investigate and purchase e-ct-filing systems.
Indeed, some Georgia court clerks and administrators are
already exploring the e-ct-filing market.
To aid court clerks
and administrators in selecting an appropriate system,
Georgia State University's Electronic Court Filing Project
and the Georgia Courts Automation Commission have created an
e-ct-filing
shopping list for Georgia court clerks and
administrators.
