2GEFS Lessons Learned
11/16/2004

In November 2002, the California Administrative Office of the Courts ("CA AOC") initiated the Second Generation Electronic Filing Specifications ("2GEFS") project to develop specifications for statewide electronic court filing. In July 2003, <xmlLegal> delivered the specifications. In August 2004, the CA AOC completed validation testing of the specifications.

The 2GEFS Lessons Learned Document is a detailed document about the 2GEFS XML Schema development and validation testing projects. The 2GEFS Lessons Learned document builds on the lessons learned in Georgia Electronic Court Filing Projects.

What Document Format is Best For Electronic Filing?
by Winchel 'Todd' Vincent III
6/1/1998

One of the first questions one must ask when considering electronic filing of court documents is "What format?"

Historically, the legal profession has used Word Perfect as its word processing tool. Microsoft Word, however, is becoming more popular in the legal office. Other formats exist, such as Rich Text Format (RTF) and Adobe's PDF. Using technology such as XML, still other "smart document" formats could exist.

The question is what format is the best for electronic filing, in the short-term and in the long-term. What Document Format is Best for Electronic Court Filing is a short, two page paper that highlights the issue.

E-CT-Filing Shopping List
by Winchel 'Todd' Vincent III
3/25/1999

As electronic court filing software and services become available in the market, court clerks and administrators will begin to investigate and purchase e-ct-filing systems. Indeed, some Georgia court clerks and administrators are already exploring the e-ct-filing market.

To aid court clerks and administrators in selecting an appropriate system, Georgia State University's Electronic Court Filing Project and the Georgia Courts Automation Commission have created an e-ct-filing shopping list for Georgia court clerks and administrators.

E-CT-Filing Papers

Two early white papers on issues in developing electronic court filing systems discuss a wide variety of topics, including civil procedure, document formats, signatures, and electronic service and notice. These documents are an introduction to electronic court filing and a good place to start to become more familiar with electronic court filing.
